Architecture Design
Nunavut Arctic College - Nunatta Campus
An institutional expansion shaped by Arctic climate, landscape, and cultural context. The building form is developed in direct response to the environmental demands of the site. Emerging from the bedrock terrain, it is shaped to mitigate snow drifting, protect the primary entrance, and balance high-performance insulation with access to daylight and expansive views of the surrounding environment. Strategic roof cuts draw southern light deep into the building, while carefully positioned glazing distributes daylight throughout interior spaces.
The internal organization emphasizes transparency and spatial interconnectivity. A circular gathering space at the entry serves as the social heart of the building, reflecting Inuit values of collaboration and shared community.
Julie contributed to the development of the building form, ensuring it responded directly to site, climate, and performance requirements. During construction, she was deeply involved in contract administration, working closely with the contractor and consultants through coordinated remote collaboration and multiple site visits. Given the logistical constraints of northern shipping schedules and limited material supply windows, careful coordination was critical. The project was ultimately delivered ahead of schedule, enabling earlier-than-anticipated occupancy.
